ICAO ATC Arrival

In this lesson, we will give an example of a pilot arriving at an airport with ATC.

Explanation   Exchange
Make the initial call.
“Borton Approach, Aero 123.”
The Controller will reply.
“Aero 123, Borton Approach.”
Pass your details to the controller, the same as we do in the UK
“Aero 123, Seneca VFR from Walden, 2500ft, 8 miles west of the control zone boundary, for landing at Borton, information golf.”
The controller will clear you into the control zone, and pass information much like in the UK
“Aero 123, enter Borton control zone proceed to Borton VFR, runway 34 right-hand circuits, QNH 1010, traffic southbound Piper Arrow III 2000 ft VFR”
Read back the clearance.
“Enter Borton control zone, cleared to Borton VFR, runway 43 right-hand circuit QNH 1012, traffic in sight, Aero 123.”
The controller will ask you to report the aerodrome in sight.
“Aero 123, report aerodrome in sight.”
Acknowledge
“Wilco, Aero 123”
Once you have a visual of the aerodrome inform the controller.
“Aerodrome in sight, Aero 123.”
 
“Aero 123, contact Barton Tower 118.7”
Read back the handoff instructions.
“Borton Tower, 118.7, Aero 123.”
Make the initial call to the tower.
“Borton Tower, Aero 123.”
 
“Aero 123, Borton Tower.”
After the initial contact pass your information.
“Aero 123, 5 miles north of Borton 2000 ft for landing.”
The controller will issue join instructions.
“Aero 123, proceed via overhead to join right-hand downwind runway 34, QNH 1012.”
Read them back.
“Proceed via overhead to join right-hand downwind runway 34, QNH 1012 Aero 123.”
Report Overhead
“Aero 123, overhead 1500 ft.”
 
“Aero 123, report descending.”
Acknowledge with just callsign.
“Aero 123”
Report descending as requested.
“Aero 123, descending.”
 
“Aero 123, report right-hand downwind runway 34”
Acknowledge with just callsign.
“Aero 123”
Report ask requested.
“Aero 123, right-hand downwind.”
You will be told what number you are in the sequence and passed traffic information.
“Aero 123, number 2 follow the Piper Arrow III on right base.”
Report if you have the traffic insight.
“Number 2, traffic in sight, Aero 123.”
 
“Aero 123, right base.”
 
“Aero 123, report final.”
Acknowledge with just callsign.
“Aero 123.”
Report once on final.
“Aero 123, final.”
The controller will issue a continue approach or landing clearance.
“Aero 123, Runway 32 cleared to land winds 310 degrees 7 knots.”
Readback Runway number and clearance to land.
“Runway 34, Cleared to land, Aero 123.”
 
“Aero 123, taxi to the end, report runway vacated”
 
“Taxi to the end, wilco, Aero 123.”
 
“Aero 123, runway vacated.”
 
“Aero 123, Taxi to the flying club via taxiway Kilo”
 
“Taxi to the flying club via taxiway Kilo, Aero 123”
