ICAO AFIS Departure

In this lesson, we will give an example of a pilot departing with an AFIS.

Explanation   Exchange
If required you can request a radio check.
“Laval Information, Aero 123, radio check 118.705”
If requested the controller will give you information from 1-5 on readability.
“Aero 123, Laval Information, read you 5.”
Request departure information, this is like our request for airfield information.
“Laval Information, Aero 123, request departure information.”
The controller will inform you of the runway, weather and QNH.
“Aero 123, runway 32, left-hand circuit, wind 320 8 knots, QNH 1002.”
Read back the information.
“Runway 32, left-hand circuit, wind 320 8 knots, QNH 1002, Aero 123.”
When ready request a taxi.
“Aero 123, ready to taxi from aeroclub apron, VFR local flight.”
The controller will issue taxi instructions
“Aero 123, taxi holding point A, runway 32, left-hand circuit.”
Read back the taxi instructions.
 “Taxi holding point A runway 32, left-hand circuits, Aero 123”
Report once you are ready for departure, do not use ready for takeoff.
“Aero 123, ready for departure.”
Like CAA AFIS they do not issue clearance to takeoff, they use free for departure, and you are responsible for making sure it’s safe to do so.
“Aero 123, no reported traffic, runway 32 left-hand circuit, free for departure, wind 320 degrees 8 knots, report airborne.”
Read back the required parts.
“Runway 32 left-hand circuit free for departure, wilco, Aero 123.”
Report airborne as requested.
“Aero 123 airborne, departing to the west.”
Control will pass you to the next controller of Unicom
“Aero 123, report passing xx or, switch to next control or Unicom”
Read back the frequency as required.
“ Aero 123, Roger. 117.505”
