CAA ATC VFR Transit Class D

In this lesson, we go through an example of arriving at an airport in controlled airspace and requesting to land.

If controllers are online you would first contact the Approach or Radar controller 15 NM or 5 minutes flying time from the ATZ boundary. If only the tower is online contact them the same distance or time.
Explanation   Exchange
Make the initial call using the full name of the station you are calling and your full callsign.
“Leeds radar, G-VACS request zone transit and basic service. ”
Will give you a squawk code so they can identify you.
“G-VACS, Squawk 2670”
Acknowledge.
“Squawk 2670, G-CS.”
The controller will ask you to pass your message, we shall use the standard free call

Who you are – what you are doing – where you are – what you want.

“G-CS, pass message”
We shall reply with the standard free call. This consists of Who you are, what you are doing, where you are and what you want.
“G-VACS, C152, Sherburn to Blackpool, VFR, currently 2400ft just west of the M1/A1 Junction VRP, request zone transit via Eccup Reservoir, Overhead, Keithley.”
They will normally issue you a squawk code and instructions. They may issue a clearance limit also.
“G-VACS, cleared to enter the Leeds Control zone via the Eccup Reservoir – runway 32 threshold – Keithley, not above 2000ft, VFR, QNH 1012 ”
Read back the clearance in full.
“Cleared to enter the Leeds Control zone via the Eccup Reservoir routing Eccup – runway 32 threshold – Keithley, not above 2000ft, VFR, QNH 1012, G-CS”
Once you enter controlled airspace the controller will give you a radar control service.
“G-CS, radar control service, inside controlled airspace.”
Acknowledge.
“Radar control service, G-CS.”
Report over Visual reporting points VRP’s
“Overhead Eccup Reservoir, G-CS.”
Acknowledge.
“G-CS, Roger, report airfield in sight.”
Report once you see the airport.
“We have the airfield in sight, G-CS.
Remember you must read back the frequency.
“Contact Leeds Tower on 120.305”
If the tower is online the approach/radar controller will hand you to the tower so they can clear you through the ATZ since that is the tower’s airspace.
Report over Visual reporting points VRP’s
“Leeds Tower, G-VACS.”
Acknowledge.
“G-VACS, Leeds Tower cleared to transit the ATZ via the 32 threshold report west side.”
Report Overhead or once crossed the airport, if requested.
“West Side, G-CS.”
Acknowledge.
“G-CS, Roger, Contact Leeds Radar 132.580.”
Remember you must read back the frequency.

Once the report x side hand them back to the approach/radar
You must reback the freq
“Leeds Radar, G-VACS.”
Will ask you what service you require outside controlled airspace.
